Bag Hats

Medieval Tailor's Assistant

These illustrations show different styles of so-called “bag hats,” a fairly simple (presumably wool) hat which seems to be a stylistic offshoot of the chaperon. The bag portion sometimes flops to the front, and sometimes towards the back. These largely appear in the 15th century, often with some form of brooch or badge at the front; the brim is sometimes rolled up, and sometimes folded.
