Basque Onomastics of the Eighth to Sixteenth Centuries
Given Names and Patronyms: Obeko - Romeo
- Obeko (m) -- possibly from the Basque (h)obe ("better") with the -ko diminutive suffix. Julio Caro Baroja, in Algunas notas sobre onomástica antigua y medieval, suggests that this may come from another Basque name, Obécuri (see DMCL VI.108); it seems more likely that the place-name Obécuri is based on the given name Obeko, rather than the other way around.
